When my dad came in September/October, we decided to tackle some pocket doors. I guess I kinda like doors since we replaced the front door and side door of the house with Dutch doors. For interior doors, our house is so small any wall space is valuable, so I knew pocket doors would be great to still have privacy but allow for a more open feel. Not having a 32″ door swing open into a 4′ square bathroom makes a huge difference when that small square has a toilet, vanity and stand up shower. I explain more on the lack of standing room below with a visual.
This is where we are with that in the master bath:
We have lots of work still left to do on that one, but in the guest bath, it’s looking a little more complete since it has trim.
As you can see, we still have lots of patching and drywall work to be done along with paint. But do you see how not having the door swinging open can make such a huge difference when you’re standing in there? The blue rug is basically the only standing room in that bathroom, so trying to maneuver around a door swing is realllllly nice.
Now that we’ve battled pulling the door out of the wall without having any hardware on it for a couple of months, it’s time to make a decision on hardware.
I love these options from Rejuvenation:

I like the top (black) one best, but it sticks out a bit and needs more clearance in the wall so I am unsure if it will work. The silver finish version is flatter and will likely provide the clearance in the wall that we need. And due to the expense of having it on 3 doors (which is about $200 a pop), I am considering not having them lock.
I need input: how vital is it to guests? Obviously we don’t need a lock with just us in the house, but I know it’d mostly be used when guests use the bathroom. I’m considering just a simple pull like this (when the door is in the wall you’d grab this):

Along with a handle like this that would be on the inside and outside of the door for when it is closed and you need to get out of the bathroom:

I’m not sure if I want the 2×4″ size or 2×8″ size, which I think would look more 1920s…
And there’s this one (shown in 2×8″):

So what do you think? It is SUPER important to a guest to have a bathroom door that locks? And when we have kids, do you think it will be important to us to have a locking door on our bedroom and master bath? Input please!!
